36 MAF Sensor Error
How to read it
Code 36 reads as 3 flashes, pause, 6 flashes on the check-engine light. Jump terminals A and B on the ALDL connector with the key off, then turn the key on with the engine off and count the check-engine flashes.
What does GM code 36 mean?
36 — MAF Sensor Error. This code sets when your vehicle computer detects maf sensor error.
Common causes of 36
- Contaminated MAF sensor sensing wire
- Air duct leak between the sensor and throttle body
- Failed MAF sensor power or ground feed
- On some models a 24X crank sensor fault uses this same code
How to fix 36
- Inspect the air duct for cracks and loose clamps first
- Clean the MAF sensing wire only with approved MAF cleaner
- Check sensor power and ground with a meter
- Compare MAF grams per second readings to specification at idle
- On 24X equipped models test the crank sensor as the alternate cause
