How to read it

Code 53 reads as 5 flashes, pause, 3 flashes on the check-engine light. Jump terminals A and B on the ALDL connector with the key off, then turn the key on with the engine off and count the check-engine flashes.

Common causes of 53

  • Faulty alternator regulator overcharging
  • Poor battery connections causing voltage spikes
  • Failed battery with an open cell
  • On digital EGR models a solenoid 1 fault uses this same code

How to fix 53

  1. Measure charging voltage and confirm it stays within specification
  2. Load test the battery and inspect cables
  3. Test the alternator regulator before replacing the ECM
  4. On digital EGR models test the EGR solenoid 1 circuit as the alternate cause
  5. Clear the code and recheck voltage after repairs under load
