83 TCC Solenoid Circuit Fault
How to read it
Code 83 reads as 8 flashes, pause, 3 flashes on the check-engine light. Jump terminals A and B on the ALDL connector with the key off, then turn the key on with the engine off and count the check-engine flashes.

What does GM code 83 mean?
83. TCC Solenoid Circuit Fault. This code sets when your vehicle computer detects tcc solenoid circuit fault.
Common causes of 83
- Failed torque converter clutch solenoid
- Open or shorted TCC solenoid wiring
- Stuck TCC apply valve
- Bad TCC brake switch or a failed ECM output driver
How to fix 83
- Retrieve codes with a paperclip across ALDL pins A and B and count the Check Engine flashes
- Check the TCC brake switch and its adjustment first
- Test the TCC solenoid and its wiring at the transmission connector
- Confirm the torque converter clutch applies and releases on a road test
- Clear codes after the repair and recheck after a road test
